Picking the right one.
A few things worth getting right before you buy. None of it is brand-specific — these are the fundamentals of a power strip that lasts.
Outlets & spacing
Count the plugs you actually run at once, then add headroom. Widely spaced or angled outlets matter as much as the count — bulky wall-warts can block neighbors on tightly packed strips.
Surge rating & VPR
Joules tell you absorption capacity, but clamping voltage (VPR) and response time decide what reaches your gear. A lower VPR clamps a spike sooner — read both, not just the headline joule number.
Cord length & gauge
Gauge is the wire thickness. 14AWG copper carries more current with less heat and voltage drop than thinner 16AWG — it matters for power tools and long runs. Pick a length that reaches without coiling.
Mounting
Keyhole slots or a metal housing let a strip live on a wall, bench, or under a desk instead of underfoot. A mountable unit keeps cords off the floor and away from spills and foot traffic.
Certification
Look for a real NRTL mark — ETL/SGS · UL1363 & UL1449 — not a self-declared claim. NRTL listing means an OSHA-recognized lab tested the unit against the U.S. safety standard for power strips and surge protectors.
What “heavy duty” means here
On this shelf, heavy duty is a build spec, not an adjective. Every strip in the collection runs a metal housing, 14AWG copper or heavier, a resettable overload breaker, and a named certification — ETL or SGS, tested to the applicable UL standards — printed on its product page where you can check it.

What makes a power strip heavy duty? +
A metal housing, 14AWG or heavier copper, a resettable overload breaker, and independent certification. If a strip cannot show all four, it is a regular strip with confident packaging.
Why do metal power strips matter? +
Metal does not crack on impact, does not soften near heat, and does not feed a fire the way plastic housings can. It also holds mounting screws without flexing.
Are these strips certified? +
Yes. Each model is certified by ETL or SGS and tested to the applicable UL standards, with the lab named on its product page. Certificates are available on request.
Which strip is right for a garage or workshop? +
Mountable models with individual switches are the workshop favorites. Use the buying guide's load calculator to match outlet count and cord length to your bench.
How many outlets can I get on one strip? +
Up to 16 outlets with 2.6-inch spacing on a 15 ft cord. Wide spacing means bulky adapters do not block their neighbors.
Do more joules mean better protection? +
Not by themselves. Joule ratings are easy to inflate and deplete over time. Build quality, certification to UL 1449, and honest specs matter more than the number on the box.
